Adopt a Terrier / Mixed (medium coat)

Gus shows nothing but love and devotion to the people he trusts but building that trust will take some time & effort. You can't help but melt when he looks at you with the sweetest brown eyes. He loves to be right next to you, but is not pushy or demanding with his affection. He's completely housetrained, leash trained, and knows which toys are his. His coat is wiry, but requires little maintenance and people with allergies have not had any reaction to him.

Gus is energetic and loves to play, but will settle right down to cuddle or take a nap. He does not have much experience with other animals, but after introductions he has been very good with other dogs. He would love to have a playmate and a big yard to run around in. Bigger dogs would be best as he can play rough. He's a quiet guy who only barks if someone rings your doorbell. He only needs an average amount of exercise - he's happy to go on a couple of walks each day, then sleep the rest of the time. Gus does not like to be crated, but he is well behaved in his foster home. When you read his story below, you will understand why Gus does not like to be crated.

Gus' original owner kept him crated 15-20 hours a day, tying him outside for 15 minutes a day with his food bowl. Poor Gus was too excited to eat a lot of the time so he quickly became skin & bones. The floor and wall behind his crate were SATURATED with urine and other nasty things. And then Gus was rescued by caring people who saw how neglected he was & they removed him from the situation.

As a result of the mistreatment he received at the hands of his original owner, Gus does have insecurities and fear issues that are being addressed and need to continue to be managed. He needs to meet people a few times before he trusts them. For this reason, he would do best in an adults-only home with an experienced, patient owner. Please consider fostering or adopting this scruffy guy.
