UPDATE 2/14/18:
Moose has been with Almost Home since September, where he consistently makes the staff smile with his happy attitude. When people come in to meet him, he sparkles with joy. He loves treats and will try his best to do what you ask of him, even for the smallest taste. He is calm and dignified when at rest in his room, is always ready for a romp, loves to lie in the sun on top of a grassy hill in one of our runs.
He recently pranced in the Lovingston Christmas Parade. There, he was great with the kids that wanted to pet him and wasn't overly excited.
Moose is fine with other dogs that are friendly. He is a big guy who loves to keep the beat with a hounds song if you walk with him on lead. Moose would not be a good fit in an apartment or townhouse, and would likely do best with an active family/person who'd like to keep him involved in some fun.
He tested “reasonable with cats” (when a cat hissed at him he backed up) but keep in mind that many dogs will chase a running cat. When new animals are together, they must be supervised very closely for quite some time.
UPDATE 12/17/17: Moose came to our shelter very thin - given up by owners who just didn't want him anymore. Moose is very friendly, and likes all people including children. He recently walked in the Lovingston Christmas Parade. At first he was a little skittish but soon understood he was out of the shelter and had lots of admirers in the crowd. Moose needs a little guidance to learn proper manners but paid attention to his handler when he was asked to walk with her on leash. He was great with the kids that wanted to pet him and wasn't overly excited with them. Moose does jump when he is excited looking for affection, without being mouthy. He calms down fairly quickly. Moose is fine with other dogs that are friendly. Moose is a big hound who loves to use his baying voice. He would not be a good fit in an apartment or townhouse. His baying subsides once he starts walking and gets his attention diverted. Moose has LOTS of energy so an active family/person would be ideal.
Good with dogs. Reasonable with cats. (When a cat hissed at him, he backed up.)
