I just have to work on an appointment basis as I run a boarding/day care business and the rescue and so am really busy, but by planning ahead of time I can be pretty flexible.
Chavez was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas, where dogs generally have just 3 days to be saved before they are killed for space. Chavez is neutered, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 5 July 2016 and weighs around 42.20 pounds. He has been listed as a Retreiver / Hound mix. We have no way of knowing the exact breed, so it is up to individuals to decide what breed they think is most likely.
Chavez is the sweetest boy, he is an active boy, but is so laid back. He was located in the kennel building with a middle aged Jack Russel Terrier as his kennel-mate and he was so sweet and gentle with her. He went outside in the run to do his business and to see what is going on outside, but when it wasn't play time he settled down and relaxed enjoying chewing on his hoof. Chavez is enjoying the snow, being from Texas this is the first time he has experienced snow and he seems to find it fascinating. In January Chavez was brought over to the house where he lives amongst 20 other dogs ranging from 5 pound chi's up to 120 pound German Shepherds. He is extremely affectionate and if there is no space on the sofa next to me, he will by my feet, with his head or paws resting on my feet.
Chavez, clearly has had a family, he does know basic commands. He will sit and give you his paw, he is very responsive and eager to learn and please his human. Chavez can get a little jealous of other dogs if he is waiting for attention and will have a low growl warning the other dogs he was here first. He will react to other dogs, however, has never got aggressive to cause any concern. shouting for him to stop is enough to get his attention and for him to come and sit down. He walks nicely on a leash.
Chavez is so sweet and loving, he loves to lean on you and get his head scratched or his belly rubbed. He wags his tail and is eager to greet people when and get lots of love, he truly is just pure-sweetness.
Chavez is great with other dogs of all ages and sizes, he just wants to play with all that he meets. We do not have cats at the rescue so cannot comment how he is with cats.
?We do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks.
Chavez is full of energy and so a family with an active lifestyle is a huge bonus. He rode great in the car and was happy looking out of the window. He would benefit from lots of road trips and adventures, hiking, trips to the lake, the beach and anywhere that he can burn off some of his energy and enjoy the sights, smells and sounds the world has to offer. He will need a family that understands the importance of training and we encourage all families to work on basic and advanced training as a family so that boundaries and expectations can be set and both Chavez and his humans can learn each others body language and personalities and form a stronger bond and understanding of each other.
Chavez is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $500.
This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.
If you feel that you have the heart and home to give this precious soul a wonderful life, please go to our website, under the APPLICATION tab, complete, then submit the APPLICATION. Our process takes around 2-4 days, and ensuring your references are aware that we will be calling, could speed up the process. Once you have been approved, we discuss any questions in regards to the dog you are wanting to adopt, then you complete and submit the contract, make payment and then we can work out the pick up / transport arrangements.
Please do NOT submit an application if you are not looking to take home a new best friend within the next few weeks.
