Adopt a Bulldog (short coat)
Georgia the Dog needs a home
Georgia is an Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog puppy that was surrendered to us after suffering an injury that significantly damaged her right eye, and caused permanent blindness in her left. She has done amazingly well since surgery though, and has quickly adapted to being blind. In fact, her hearing and "echo-location" are so good, sometimes you wouldn't even know she can't see!
Her name is a nod to her breed's heritage, which was developed and used in the south as a working dog for farmers, ranchers and hunters.
Georgia does well with some dogs, and is easily startled and reactive with others, so a potential fur sibling for her should be tolerant, social and non-reactive. (A meet and greet is required prior to adoption.). She has ignored cats so far... they don't make a lot of noise, so she doesn't even seem to know they're around!
She is ALL puppy, so she is bouncy and bratty and playful and mouthy. We are working on her nippy behavior, but her new family will need to continue to be consistent with correcting her. She loves toys, so redirecting her towards things she's allowed to chew on isn't too difficult. Because of her blindness and the fact that she can't always see what she's grabbing at, we don't think a home with small children would be ideal for her. A fenced in yard and experience with the breed or other stubborn, strong willed breeds is preferred!
She is very cuddly and sweet, and loves to bring her toys onto your lap so she can lay with you while she plays. She also gives great puppy kisses! She will follow you all around, and likes to be near you. Because she can't see, sometimes this means she is a little underfoot, so you need to be careful to not step on or trip over her!
Georgia is a smart girl and is extremely food motivated. She learned "sit" in just 2 days! However keeping her attention since she can't see you is sometimes challenging. Thankfully, her hearing is incredible and she is very quick to respond to kissy noises and/or calling her towards you. She is comfortable spending time in a crate, (she will fuss a bit at first, then settle down and sleep), but has not yet mastered house training.
A potential adopter should be prepared to attend professional training/socializing classes with Georgia. With her breed and vision issues, this is VERY important!!! We will work with her new family to help set them up with a trainer/facility. We just want to do all we can to set everyone up for success, and to ensure Georgie has the best life possible. A well trained, social puppy will grow up to be a well trained, social adult dog!
If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected]. Her adoption fee is $300, and includes all her ER vetting and spay, microchip, deworming and age appropriate vaccines. She is current on monthly flea/heartworm preventative. Her parents were both between 70 and 80lbs, so we expect her to mature to be around that size. DOB 10/31/17.
