Adopt a Australian Shepherd / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (short coat)
Jack the Dog needs a home
Jack came into a local animal shelter as a stray with no previous history and has been living in foster care now for almost a year. He is guessed to be about 6 years old and is vetted and housetrained.
Jack is hoping to find a very special adopter to strongly bond with and to play fetch and go on long walks with. He's a smart and quirky character who will keep you on your toes with his physical and mental exercise needs. His ideal home would be a quieter one without a lot of activity or people coming and going.
Jack's instinct is to bark and sometimes charge at/chase moving objects in his environment like bicycles, skateboards, strollers, joggers and motor vehicles. He may also bark/lunge at strangers who move towards him or move too quickly. He is more nervous of males than females. With management and training in his foster home he is doing well while out and about in the neighbourhood but he will require ongoing help with his triggers. A suburban or rural setting would suit him best.
Jack is looking for a home with experience working with and training fearful/reactive dogs using counter conditioning, desensitization, and positive reinforcement. A female caregiver would be easier for Jack, however, interested male adopters with the aforementioned experience are also welcome to apply.
Jack is not suitable for apartment living as he can be quite vocal. He is also not suitable for a home with children.
Once he bonds with you, Jack is an affectionate and snuggly guy and will thrive in a home that keeps him feeling safe and is willing to manage his interactions to set him up for success.
