Adopt a Cockatoo

Sassy is a beautiful  Moluccan Cockatoo. Her personality matches her name but she also can be very sweet.  She loves to be the center of attention and can be loud when she feels slighted.  Sassy is affectionate and cuddly.  She enjoys sitting on my lap when I watch TV or work on my computer.  She is also quite the dancer and whistler when the mood strikes her.  She enjoys taking outdoor walks with me and is very good about meeting people along the way as they make a big fuss about her. She also enjoys road trips and visiting friends.  

I try to make her part of my daily routine. She enjoys eating with us. She has quite a varied diet, and enjoys fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, grains and cereals. She loves taking showers with me on her shower perch. Since she is a typical female, she will preen herself in front of the bathroom mirror on her tabletop perch.  This is also a time for nail trimming when necessary.  Sassy is accustomed to a motorized rotary nail trimmer. When Sassy is not with her humans, she loves to watch PBS children’s TV shows during the day.  She also enjoys watching videos of parrots, particularly Cockatoos.  Sassy has a consistent sleep routine and has a separate sleeping room where it is quiet and dark.

Sassy shares her space with a Cockatiel friend.  She has lived with other small birds over the years and enjoys the companionship of another bird.  We also have a dog and cat in the household and she is fine with them, as well. 

Sassy would be best suited in a home where someone is home a lot and has experience with Cockatoos.  She needs supervised out-of-the-cage time throughout the day and at meal times.   A hectic environment with small children would be stressful for Sassy.  She prefers a quieter environment.  She tends to form bonds with men more quickly than women, although she can form strong bonds with women as well. I am a female and her primary caregiver and we share a strong bond.  Sassy has strong mating and nesting instincts and exhibits cavity seeking behaviors.  She plucks her leg feathers sometimes but hormone therapy gives her relief.  Other than the behaviors just noted, Sassy is a very healthy girl.

Many of the birds on this site are being fostered before they find their forever home.  I actually am Sassy’s “mom” and have enjoyed her companionship for almost 40 years.  She has been a wonderful companion and a joy to live with.  The reason I am looking to place her in a new home is because I am getting older and I know she will outlive me.  Therefore, I would like to find a loving forever home for Sassy where she can thrive for many years to come.
