Adopt a Chihuahua (short coat)
Juniper the Dog needs a home
We found this sweet girl lying alone in a dirt lot while flyering in South Phoenix for our weekly free spay and neuter clinic. We feared the worst and were so relieved when she lifted her head as we approach.
This poor chihuahua was skin and bones and absolutely filthy. We called her over and she crawled to us and submissively rolled on her back. She was lethargic and noticeably dehydrated. We picked her up and began to ask the surrounding neighbors who she belonged to. Each person recognized her as the little stray that runs around the neighborhood but that she isn't owned and nobody is caring for her. This was very clear to us. It only would be a matter of time before she would be hit by a car or literally starve or freeze to death. This poor girl had no one looking out for her until we came strolling down the street.
We do want to make something very clear before we continue her story. We do not go into this community looking to take people's dogs. We have worked in this community long enough to understand how it works. Many dogs are allowed to run free and though we don't believe dogs should run free for many reasons, we also believe in education and law enforcement. The best we can do is try to talk with owners about leash laws and the dangers and liability of allowing your pet to run loose in hopes of strengthening the human-animal bond and the benefits of a pet being part of the family.
Back to Juniper's story, as you may have guessed we rescued this sweet girl. As we we found Juniper, sadly, AZK9 founder Jessica was losing her beloved best friend Presley. Presley was Jessica's best friend for many years and our hearts are with her and her husband Ben. We asked that they give our special little rescue a name in honor of Presley. They named her Juniper after Juniper Park in Chicago where Jessica used to take Presley when she was a puppy to play. We think it's perfect.
Sadly Juniper had to be hospitalized at Vetmed. Juni had what looked like a ruptured gallbladder, an infection, her liver values were high and she was jaundice. She underwent surgery that was successful and she is now back home with us! Juniper was a lucky recipient of PACC911's Lulu's Angel Fund and we are sincerely grateful for their support in her urgent time of need. It was also recently discovered that she has Tick Fever and is currently being treated.
We are so lucky we found her when we did. Juniper is a total lap dog and loves to be held and snuggled. She would be fine with calm dogs and children as long as they are gentle as she is very tiny and fragile. She would be the perfect companion for someone who is home all the time and needs a friend as she is happiest when she is snuggled up near you!
