Adopt a Terrier / Poodle (Toy) / Mixed (medium coat)

Tyler is a special dog with very specific needs. Please read his description and only inquire if you meet the requirements below and are serious about helping a dog with special needs and behavior issues.

Tyler is a 5 year old, male Terrier/Poodle mix, weighs around 35. He's a gorgeous boy and is very loving once he gets to know you. Tyler has major trust issues with new people. He was very scared when we first got him in and he didn't trust anyone. A trainer said he was previously abused which makes sense why it takes time for him to become comfortable with new people he meets.

He loves our volunteers, who he knows and trusts. He needs a calm, loving person who has a lot of dog experience. He doesn't like strangers coming up to him until he gets to know them well. He must have the right adopter and right home for it to work out. He will do best in a calm, quiet home with someone who will be patient until he comes out of his shell. Not a home with several people coming and going, preferably a one or two person home with no children.

If someone will give him a chance, they will be very happy they did.
Tyler loves to play with toys and to go for walks and especially likes to hang out on the sofa. He rides great in the car also. He must be the only pet in the home. Other animals who get too close to him, really seems to bother him. He has never been around children and given that he's nervous with new people at first, kids will not be suitable for him. The most important thing is a calm, quiet home with one or two people, preferably someone a little older and more settled. Young adults, out of college, engaged or who will have children in the future won't be the right match for Tyler.

Once Tyler trusts you, he's the MOST affectionate dog. He'll even hug you around the neck to show you how much he cares. In order for Tyler to get used to someone new, it will take several introductions.
We've had dogs like Tyler in the past and when we take things slow, they work out beautifully for the dog and for the adopter.
