Adopt a German Shepherd Dog
Leah the Dog needs a home
LEAH is a petite (and gorgeous!) black and tan, medium sized girl, who is such a doll that one look from her big ol’ eyes will just melt your heart! Leah spend the first part of her life in the cruel world of a puppy mill business, where she never had the chance to feel the comfort of human touch, or to experience her world as safe. But now she is with us, and thanks to the care of a wonderful foster home, is beginning to come out of her shell and experience the good life.
TEMPERAMENT
Leah is a very sweet natured and curious girl, who loves ear rubs and chin scratches if approached very slowly. She has been slowly exploring her new world in her foster home, and is beginning to make progress at learning to trust her people. She enjoys following her foster mom around and learning the smells of so many new things, and is often busy checking out anything foster mom touches. She can be shy and uncertain at times, so needs to be handled patiently, calmly and quietly as she works on building her confidence and learning about a world that is suddenly bigger and more interesting than the small cage she was confined to. One of her favorite things to do so far is going for walks, and she does well on a leash.
Because of her history of trauma, abuse and neglect in a puppy mill, Leah has been undersocialized, and experiences mild-to-moderate anxiety and shyness. She tends to seek out corners or small areas to lay in, where she can see the world around her. She does not like storms that include loud thunder, and will sometimes try to hide in the bathtub as her safe place. After her first two months in foster care, she is beginning to show some improvement in her confidence, and starting to extend her comfort zones.
OTHER ANIMALS
Leah has been around both cats and dogs in her foster home, and has had no issues around either. She also did well with a small size neighbor’s dog, and even got to visit some of our alums and was totally smitten. She will need a dog buddy of medium size or larger in her forever home to hang out with, and help build her confidence.
CHILDREN
Due to her shyness, Leah would do better with older children, 12+ who have some experience interacting with shy dogs
MEDICAL
Once under the care of MOGS' Vet Team, it was discovered that Leah has intentionally had her teeth ground down and her voice box removed. Several of her remaining teeth have been chipped, or are missing, and she may need ongoing attention to her dental needs.
Despite her background, Leah is working hard to learn to trust, and is super smart, gentle and curious. Will you be the one to give this beautiful girl the loving home she deserves?
If you're looking for a gorgeous, young, trainable German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
Leah may be your ideal family member!
LEAH'S ADOPTION FEE: $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
