Adopt a Border Collie / Collie / Mixed (medium coat)

Grover's foster family here:  We love Grover. He's a smart, funny, high-energy dog. He's a great size and he's very loving.  He's got plenty of character, and would be a terrific fit for active people.  He loves other dogs  and will wrestle for hours, and we frequently find him spooning with one of our other dogs at night or during naptime.  He's beautifully crate trained and housebroken, and he walks well on a leash when we use a Gentle Leader.  We haven't tried him with cats, but given his ongoing quest to rid our yard of chipmunks, we keep our guinea pigs out of reach, just in case.

If he sounds perfect, he almost is.  When he's home with his pack, he feels secure and has fun. However, Grover can be picky about other people, and we discovered that younger kids who are not used to dogs didn't do well with him. He can be aggressive with strangers and guests on his own territory (though he's fine outside on a walk), and we often have to crate him when we have company.  Our kids (who've been around lots of different dogs from a young age) were fine with him, but they're pretty battle-hardened and nothing phases them. I wouldn't put him in a family with kids younger than teens, however, because of that unpredictability when friends come over.  He has a parrot mouth deformity -- which just means his lower jaw is a bit crooked; it doesn't slow him down at all -- and he can be a bit mouthy when he plays. He is also still learning not to jump up but has a hard time resisting the temptation to give kisses 3 feet in the air.

Grover's a great dog, and a smart dog, and a loving dog, and he wants to be a good dog, but he'll need some help with that journey.  If you're looking for a buddy to go hiking or running, the Grove is your man. If you have another dog who's a little bored, Grover can help. If you need someone to snuggle with at nap time, Grover is always willing to do that in exchange for giving you a thorough tongue bath.
