Adopt a Terrier / Mixed

York is a small Terrier mix boy that has led a life that we probably don’t want to hear about.  It has left this 4 year old,  20 pound dog skittish and untrusting of humans till he gets to know them.  This scruffy-faced fellow came to us from a terrible situation and is still working toward trusting people. He is crate trained and completely house trained. He enjoys the freedom of a fenced yard and loves romping and rolling in the grass, so a fenced yard is a must for this guy.  York gets along well with other dogs and loves playing with the dogs in his foster home.  He was taken in along with his sister, who has already been adopted and is flourishing in her forever home.  York is looking for a home where there will be one or two other dogs to play with because he would not like to be alone.  He loves toys and especially loves stuffed squeaky toys.  He carries them around the house and even carries them out into the yard when he can sneak them past his foster mom.  He has learned to catch toys and snacks when they are tossed and is very proud of this new skill.  Because of his past, York is fearful of men.  He responds more readily to the gentle, cheerful voices and smiling faces of women.  He is alert, sensitive, and needs a relatively calm environment with no small children. York was not socialized as a pup so when he is afraid, he cowers and seeks a safe place.  Although he has learned a lot and made great strides in his foster home, he has not yet had the chance to put his past behind him. York is looking for a home with someone willing to give him the time and attention to help him blossom into a wonderful companion and friend for life.   We see York best with someone who wants to help “Fix” the emotional complexity and uncertainty of a dog damaged by humans.   Someone who knows it will take a few months for York to come around and trust but someone who knows it will happen in his time and not our human time.  Could that be you?
