Hansel is a very lucky-to-be-alive survivor of pigeon racing. He was struck by a hawk but was only injured rather than killed. Then, when he was grounded and helpless, he was lucky to be taken to a shelter rather than killed and eaten. Then he was lucky to be taken into rescue rather than be euthanized. (He went unclaimed by his owner despite the shelter's efforts.) Now he's all healed up and strong and feisty and married to an adorable little Birmingham Roller named Lola.
