Adopt a Italian Greyhound (short coat)
Andy the Dog needs a home
Meet Andy, he is a sweet little man who wants someone to care for him. Andy is a very chill Italian Greyhound adult who loves laying around all day, and will lift his head when you walk by or come in the door. Not a hyper guy by any measure, and he came from a home where his previous owner passed away. So, he is looking for someone to fill that void. Andy lived in Queens before, so he is used to all the hustle and bustle of city life, so not much phases him,and he knows how to potty on a leash too. He seems to be ok with people leaving the house and doesn't have any separation anxiety.
His foster home gave this report on Andy:
- What a sweetheart - Andy is a good guy. He would do GREAT with another 8-9-10 year old nice IG that he can lay with and then follow. He loves other dogs - more than people - but the dog has to be a lover too. You can see his old youthful self under his current personality.
- He was really skittish at first and shaking but now seems really resilient and totally stopped all that - it made us love him - he learns pretty fast. Very well behaved & quiet - we can see how he could cry under the wrong conditions - he seems braced for the worst and hopeful for the best.
- He had a skin allergy or rash and discoloration - a better food should help - low ingredient - senior food and using venison and fish (dry skin). He went to a spa day - he looks WAY better - he could not walk before because he nails were so long. He needs some oil/fish oil/conditioner olive oil regularly applied to keep his skin moisturized. The skin issue he arrive with look very fixable.
- He does seem to have has arthritis in back legs and is quite stiff and needs lots of warming up and love in the AM.
- He has a killer bladder when he wants to - pees on the street very well and often twice and seems to be able to wait 8+ hours. Will poop if walked a good distance.
- He has not asked to go out - but he slept from midnight to 8am and we took him out without prompting and he was fine - he’s housebroken but he is not going to come get you.
He does love to be outside, and giving him an opportunity to pee a few times each visit helps to reduce accidents he does have indoors.
- His eyes are wide and bright but he’s pretty blind we feel (80%?) although sure he sees large shapes and shadows if its bright light. He is maybe 90% deaf or has very selective hearing to hear what he wants.
- He drinks water with coaxing - have not seen him drink without an invite. But this should change as he settles in to a home.
- Hes not exactly sure how to spend the day - on floor he circles often & usually very tired trying to keep eyes open (When he is sitting on the floor he does not follow the sun like other greyhounds but seems content regardless.) He does appreciate knowing that someone is nearby with an occasional rub or pat on the head.
- We take off pillows from sofa and invite him up slowly and gently - but he often jumps back down and stands on floor.
- Tail in-between legs when with people - straight out for dogs - in-between when his ears are rubbed.
- Walked on street super well - was shocked given his slow deliberate behavior in apartment - he knows the leash means you’re in charge I suspect - which is nice - he trusts his guardians.
- He likes to eats human food really well - but is now eating Blue - fish and venison formula.
Andy quickly learns his way around his environment (including stairs), even with what we think is limited sight and hearing. According to his previous vet history, he may have some prostate issues, and he does need out to potty regularly (hourly) so he doesn't have accidents. But part of that may have been that at his previous house he may not have been on a regular schedule and needs retrained. That is yet to be determined since he is new to our program.
