Howdy, y’all! My name’s Blu Bourbon, and I’m a Texas Blue Lacey. That’s just fancy talk for "working dog." My breed is what makes me look so cute, and gives me my distinctive features!
I have a lot of energy to burn and love being outside! This really helps me to chill out while my foster mom is at work or school. Right now I go hiking on nature trails, and run around a baseball field (fenced in, off-leash) and a soccer field (on-leash). I am really looking for a forever buddy to hang out with!! I love to cuddle and gives kisses, so pucker up! Chew toys, squeaky toys, and soft plush toys allow me to keep myself occupied! There are no other doggies in my current home but I would not mind a canine brother or sister. They might even be able to be feline (as long as they can tolerate a playful pup)! I am always being told I am such a good boy! I am already house trained and I'm pretty good in my crate. I enjoy kids (though I can be a bit jumpy still). I know how to “sit,” “stay,” “leave it,” “off” and “down.” I walk like a nice boy, and I love other dogs, if I'm introduced slowly. I can have a loud bark but that’s just my way of saying hi and making sure you know I am there. I can get a bit stimulated by unfamiliar people and dogs, more so when I am on-leash, but boy do I love saying hi and playing. I am easily corrected if I fall out of line, and treats are a great motivator for me. I'd like a strong leader to show me the world, as it is a very big place to me! I am very smart and like being mentally stimulated. The trainer I’ve worked with thinks agility courses and/or nose work would be great activities for me! I can jump really high, if you’re impressed by that kind of thing!
Everyone seems to be wondering why I have not been adopted yet. I think you’ll really love me, and all the fun things I’m capable of! I am very affectionate, and am looking for a home to call my own. If you think I am up your alley, fill out an application today and get the ball rolling!
Medical Note: Blu is currently on Prozac to help him focus and reduce his underlying anxiety. This prescription costs about $4-10/month (depending upon the pharmacy), and his new family should expect to keep him on this for at least 3-6 months after adoption for consistency. He will likely always need to be on this, or he may be able to be gradually weaned off this under the supervision of a veterinarian behaviorist.
Medical Note: Blu [PCR] tested positive for canine distemper (CDV) the day after he was given his first distemper vaccination in a Texas shelter (4/19/17). He showed mild symptoms of diarrhea, lethargy, green eye discharge from his right eye, and mild coughing for one day, all of which resolved 24 hours after he was moved to foster isolation. It is hard to know if Blu actually had distemper, as his symptoms were so mild and vaccination can alter PCR test results for up to two weeks. He has not shown any concerning symptoms since this episode, and has since been retested and is negative for distemper. It is thought that dogs can shed CDV for up to four months post infection although most do not shed the virus much beyond two weeks. Neurological signs can develop during or months after the infection. Blu has been examined, shows no concerning symptoms, and is cleared for adoption at this time; he is ready to find his fur-ever home! If you have any concerns, please discuss this situation with your trusted veterinarian.
Adoption Fee: $425
**Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.
