RESCUING ZIGGY
Ziggy, formerly known as King P, came into Fulton County Animal Services after his owner surrendered him at only 4 months old. He was in pain and limping badly. X-rays revealed old bilateral fractures in the front legs. Fulton thought they had rescue commitments for Ziggy several times, but it kept falling through and poor Ziggy sat at the pound for several weeks. He was running out of time and was supposed to be euthanized on Monday, July 17th at 5PM. Luckily, Ziggys time was not up yet and one of our previous adopters stepped up to foster him.
Ziggy was in rough shape. On top of the obvious injuries to both of his front legs, he was also infested with tape worms and coccidia. He was dewormed and had a new set of x-rays. His X-rays were sent over to Dr Cross at GVS. Ziggys fractures were partially healed, completely out of place, which is what was causing him such extreme discomfort. There was no guarantee that surgery would help him, but we had to try. Ziggy underwent surgery for the first leg on Thursday, July 20th 2017. That first surgery went well and Dr Cross was able to attempt to repair both legs on that same day. After about 4 weeks, Ziggys casts finally came off on August 16th 2017. His legs were extremely atrophied and he was on strict order to take it easy for the first few weeks. After about 5 weeks, he started rehabilitation at GVR. Swimming at GVR helped him to develop muscle-mass in his front legs to stabilize him. Dr Cross examined a new set of x-rays from September 12th 2017 and said Ziggy is fully healed and has no restrictions. Ziggy is now able to run and play!
ABOUT ZIGGY
Despite all he has been through, Ziggy is your typical, happy puppy and is enjoying life. He loves playing, eating, and rolling around in the grass. Did we mention eating? This boy is seriously food-motivated! He is also crate trained and house-broken. Ziggy enjoys spending time with his doggie foster siblings and pestering the resident cat. He absolutely loves sunbathing on the deck and snuggling with his people. He has learned the joys of playing fetch and will bring tennis balls back to you enthusiastically. The Zig-man loves to play now that his legs have healed. He is a total clown and loves to roll around on his back or toss toys around to himself and occasionally chase his tail. He also really enjoys watching TV, seriously, he actually looks at the screen!
Ziggy walks and runs easily. He is actually pretty fast. He can get a bit tired and clumsy after a while, but he loves a good game of chase in the backyard with his foster-siblings. He likes going on walks and does well on a leash, however he will likely never be anyones long-distance running partner. In the future, he may develop some additional arthritis in his legs but he can run, jump, play, and tackle stairs no problem. Ziggy has even had a few day-trips to doggy daycare where he was able to socialize with a large group of dogs and go for pack-walks. Ziggy is finally healed and ready to entertain his forever family with his silly antics!
What does a typical day look like for Ziggy, you ask? Ziggy LOVES feeding time. He goes out to potty in the morning and flies straight into his crate for breakfast. Then he will go out again and play around with the other dogs in the house while his foster-mom gets ready for work. He hangs out quietly in his crate, chewing a Nylabone or Kong and napping until his foster-mom gets home from work. Many afternoons, he gets to go for a walk with his foster-mom and doggie-friends. Weather permitting, he has been walking about 1 to 1.5 miles and he walks very nicely on a leash. If his foster-mom does not feel like walking, Ziggy loves to play fetch with a tennis ball in the house or backyard. He also likes to wrestle around or play NASCAR in the backyard with the other dogs. He eats dinner in his crate and he gets a Dasuquin Soft Chew with his meal in the evenings to combat the bit of arthritis in his elbows. Ziggy is very sweet and really enjoys a good snuggle and is happy to lounge around on the sofa with his people. He would fit well into most households as he would not mind being an only dog soaking up all the attention or sharing the spotlight with fun doggie-friends. He is good with the resident cat and really enjoys the company of his people.
ZIGGYS DNA TEST RESULTS VIA WISDOM PANEL show that he is 50 percent American Staffordshire Terrier; 12.5 percent German Shepherd; 12.5 percent Boxer, 12.5 percent Mix-Breed Groups; and 12.5 percent Saint Bernard!!
