Phoenix the Dog needs a home

ATDR 2349
Phoenix – (def.) a sacred, mythical bird that arises from its own ashes, reborn anew to live again.  This is the reason this lovely little spirit is named Phoenix.  Phoenix was reborn after being thrown over a cliff from a car.  Fortunately, some teenagers saw it happen and they gathered up Phoenix and took him to a local vet where he remained recovering for two weeks.  A call went out to have him moved to a foster home and ATDR answered that call.  Needless to say, it is taking Phoenix a little time to recover his trust of humans; but he is making incredible progress.  He really enjoys playing with his foster siblings.  Phoenix isn’t entirely doxie, he has a little mixture in there that just makes him more interesting.  He is a double dapple, with limited vision and hearing; but he certainly doesn’t let that slow him down during playtime.  Hopefully, there is someone out there for young Phoenix who has the time to help this little man recover his trust in humans and who can appreciate his gentle nature.  His recovery so far is nothing less than his namesake; he has arisen from the ashes, reborn anew, and starting to soar.

UPDATE 5/26/12 - Hello! It is me Phoenix!! I know you haven't heard from me for awhile. Life has been good and a bit challenging for me these past two years. First of all, we moved from my first home to a new one in a new town. It took me a little bit to adjust but I am doing great now.  Remember how I used to be afraid of my foster parents? Well, I am not anymore! I sit on/in mom's lap and when she isn't home, I sit in/on dad's lap. I have two places that I sleep at night. One is on mom's pillow, above her head or right next to her. Sometimes under the covers even! I used to freak out when mom would put anything over my face.  I will go in and out the door without having to be encouraged. I do it all on my own! Which is a HUGE obstacle for me to overcome. (Mom and dad used to have to chase me, corner me, and carry me in when they first got me cause I was sooooo scared of them) They rub my head and give me kisses when I come in now! I am such a big boy!  A couple of month ago, my foster mom said that someone was interested in meeting me. So I got to go on a road trip to Buda. I walked like a champ on a leash, played with the other doxies there and was a gentleman in all areas. Mom was so very very proud of me! I was even a champ at Aunt Kim's house where we stayed!  Foster parents say I have come such a long, long way from when they first got me. And I was such a scared little boy that had just been thrown off of a cliff and left to die!  I am still hoping to find a furever home. If you have a place in your heart please consider me! I am a super good boy!

Update: 6/1/13

Phoenix is doing fabulous!!!  He has come out of his shell so nicely.  He now sleeps either on my pillow, right  next to me or under the covers next to me.  Phoenix has NEVER been a fan of having his head covered and one night he was looking at the covers.  I raised them and under he went!  He was kind of confused and curious at the same time.  It took him a bit to realize that he could sleep under them.  After going in and out a few times, he settled right in and went to sleep.   Now it is an every night occurrence.

Phoenix likes to go on walks in the neighborhood.  He is really good on a leash.  Despite his deafness and tunnel vision, he really enjoys being out.  His tail wags non stop when we are on walks.

When I am home, Phoenix is never far from me.  He watches my every move and follows right on my heels when in the back yard.  If I am at work, or away from the house, he buddies up with my husband, something he used to never do.  A good friend of mine was here this weekend and Phoenix hasnt seen her in over a year.  He remembered her and was so happy to see her.  He even allowed her to pick him up and love on him.

Every bit of Phoenix's progress has been on his terms.  My husband and I have not forced anything on him.  Sleeping close to me was his idea.  Then the pillow and now under the covers.  We get out in the backyard and play chase with Phoenix.  He is a hoot to watch run everywhere.   There are two or three other doxies that we have that he runs and plays with also.  One is quite a bit faster than him, so he loses her.  Once she realizes that he has lost her, she runs real close to him so he can see her and then the chase is on again, until he loses her again.

Phoenix has the most calm spirit and loving heart.  He has also start giving kisses.  Not often but he does give them.  When you get a kiss from Phoenix, you know you have made him very happy!

Thanks for asking about our fella!  He is a great boy and we love him dearly!
