A Little Bit About Me
Cbopper's person was too sick to care for him, so he searches now for a new family. Although he might not have had a very social life previously, he is open to meeting new people and could give his trust to them. He is a good age; he is what he appears to be, although all dogs seem to change some in their new situation. And he still has tons to share.
He plays, cuddles some, likes to be near his people - too much it seems, as he is not comfortable being left home alone. We think he lived mostly outdoors, so he needs time to get used to being an indoor dog. This is the best situation for any dog - safety, health, and relationship-wise. At Chopper's age it will be easier to adjust than when he is elderly and must be kept indoors for health reasons.
This smart guy also needs an improved exercise and dietary routine! That extra poundage will cause him pain, if it doesn't already. Two good meals a day, with calories reduced to account for yummy training treats, will be great. Build up his exercise; the Australian Cattle Dog is an athletic, energetic breed that tends to gather girth without enough exercise.
Another great thing about the breed is their smarts. They actually thrive on being given a job. Traditionally herders, there are plenty of other dog sports to try. Start with the basics to give your intercommunication skills a quick boost.
Respectful kids should be great buddies for Chopper, but the Australian Cattle Dog sometimes is not interested in partying. They can be standoffish at first but he warms up pretty quickly. Maybe some of his herding instinct will come out around youngsters, who knows?
Chopper likes other dogs but would not appreciate the younger, physical players at dog parks. He does not get along with all dogs so be sure to match him carefully.
This handsome guy needs some patience with changes in his life, but is totally capable of changing his family's life for the better.
