Our veterinarian was pleasantly surprised by Mabel’s robust health considering her age (12 -14 years old). She does suffer from arthritis, is hard of hearing and has cataracts - all completely age related-ailments that do not appear to greatly impact her daily life. We give her a daily dose of Deramaxx to offset any arthritis pain, which has helped tremendously. We also currently give her Prozac for separation anxiety since our lifestyle doesn’t exactly fit hers.
We guess Mabel is a beagle mix, but her coat is lush and very soft - much more so than a standard beagle. She has big paws, warm eyes and very pretty brown and white markings.
Mabel’s idea of heaven is to curl up with her person on the couch during the day, snuggle at the foot of the bed each night and have a couple of Milk Bones thrown in for good measure. She just wants to be close to people and sleep the day away in a safe place. This dog was definitely someone’s “baby” and has been raised to be a low maintenance and loving companion.
She is a very determined, smart dog and, in her prime, was probably a hoot and a half! She has no fear and is not easily deterred. Within a matter of days, she learned how to open our screen door with her mouth, use her nose to manipulate a blocked dog door, all so she could come inside and camp out on the couch.
Mabel was found in the middle of a busy intersection during a thunderstorm and definitely has anxiety about lightning and rain (she can’t really hear thunder). She trembles, but finds comfort in human touch during these times of stress.
Mabel is spayed, up to date on vaccines and house-trained.
We have not had her around children, so we cannot provide information about how well she interacts with kids. She craves human interaction, however, and has never demonstrated anything but sweet, low-key behavior with us (male and female adults). Ideally, we believe Mabel would make the perfect companion for a senior dog-lover.
Because Mabel is hard of hearing and has cataracts, she can be easily startled and we believe this puts her on high alert when around other dogs. She has exhibited some slight protection regarding food, although this is inconsistent.
