We received a plea from a small shelter saying they had a lovely German Shepherd Dog who arrived missing her rear right foot. The shelter was desperate to find a rescue for this gorgeous and sweet girl and there was no way we could say no when we saw the picture of her leg, which was missing part of her foot. We took her straight to the vet for X-rays and further diagnostics. Schatzi's X-rays showed that her rear foot had been injured in such a way that she lost all of her toes. We discussed whether or not she would be a good candidate for a prosthetic, as she did still have part of her foot, and decided to take some additional films to check out her hips, because she had a substantial limp and was quite painful when we received her. Further X-rays showed a badly fractured hip socket. It appeared that she was likely hit by a car: the impact fracturing her hip and maybe the roll over of a tire severing her toes. The X-rays were reviewed by the orthopedic team who decided that surgery was not a good option. Her leg was not able to be saved in any good form that would lead to a great quality of life for Schatzi. While we were sad that she would not be a candidate for a prosthetic or orthopedic repair, we did know that GSDs do extremely well as tripods! Our vet team agreed that an amputation was the best option for Schatzi, who has healed nicely and is now recovering in a wonderful foster home. She adores people, is crate trained, potty trained, and gets along well with other dogs.

The minimum adoption donation for adults is $300 and the adoption donation for puppies is $400 - $500. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is tax deductible. The adoption donation provides that all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis ( i.e., puppies who will need to be altered by 6 mos old). Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.
