Chico the Dog needs a home

Chico joined our rescue by walking in between the pickets of our wrought iron fence and making himself at home. I guess he saw all the dogs in our yard and thought -- "This looks like a dog-friendly place -- I think I'll stay!" Once we had fed him enough that he could no longer fit between the fence-pickets, then we figured he was healthy enough to be neutered.

We don't know anything about his history, but apparently he has been mistreated by a man at some point in his past because Chico is a bit slow to warm up to most men. But once he decides you're OK, he is completely devoted and eager to please. He's a very handsome boy with a sleek tri-color coat, but we really have no idea what combination of breeds he might be. We've made our best guess based on photos and breed standards we've read for dozens of dogs, coupled with the likelihood of those breeds actually being found in our area. In spite of the name "Blue Lacy", there is a tri-color Texas Lacy, so that's one possibility. Chico has an unusual bark that doesn't really sound like a bark, so that's why we included Basenji as one of his probable breeds. His coat looks a lot like a Beagle, but that's the only thing about him that looks Beagle. He also looks a lot like a cross between an Appenzeller or Entlebucher Sennenhund.and a Danish Swedish Farm Dog, but seriously, how likely are any of those breeds to be found as strays here in Texas? Plus, none of those breeds are on the list that we get to choose from on our adoption site. One of our rescue friends calls dogs like this "Texas Field Dogs" because there could have been a dozen different breeds contributing to their DNA. No matter his pedigree (or lack thereof), Chico is a sweet, wonderful boy who deserves an equally wonderful home.

Chico has proven to be safe around our chickens, and he is a good watch dog. He would do well in a home where he can come and go between inside the house or outside in our fenced yard. He gets along well with dogs of all sizes, and loves attention from his humans without being needy or demanding.
