Phantom the Dog needs a home
26 Nov 2017: Phantom is 3 years old and about 60 pounds. He is good with other dogs, loves to play hide and seek behind trees with other dogs. He has not been cat tested.
I take Phantom’s leash and he immediately accepts me, staring up with big amber eyes, smiley and curious. He hops into the car and we’re off. He lays right down and chews on his toys.
We have some time to kill before I can get him into boarding, so I take him to the park. The first thing I notice is his dazzling coat. It’s incredibly shiny and soft. Pictures don’t do it justice! The sunlight catches reddish brown flecks in his fur and I wonder if there’s a chocolate lab in his family tree.
No dogs come near us but there are many in sight and he shows no interest in them. He’s not really interested in the people either. I give him the chance to sniff and explore. He’s excited and tugs a little. But when I decide to lead he follows with no complaint. He’s utterly charming and I wonder how anyone could give up on this dog. I try a few commands and he’s clueless. I wonder how many “issues” could have been solved with a basic obedience class.
I give him some treats which he accepts gently. When we finally get to boarding, there’s a catch in my throat. His body language has changed. He knows what’s going on. This isn’t the first home he’s lost or the first family who’s let him down. I wish I could take him with me but my pack is full. This is a horrible day and I don’t think it will ever get easier, watching a dog have his world turned upside down. He’ll be treated well in boarding but it’s not a home. I say my goodbyes and pray that someone out there is looking for a good boy like Phantom, someone who deserves him.
