Chihuahua (medium coat) Dog

SKIPPER the Dog needs a home

Meet Skipper. Skipper is about 3 years young and in short? a total enigma. His personality is ?ying and yang?, ?this way and that way?, ?happy go lucky and frozen in fear?, ?outgoing and hiding?, ?wanting attention and don?t touch?, ?mostly good with small dogs, not at all with larger ones?, and so it goes.
Life with Skipper, therefore, is never boring, but amusing and challenging at the same time. We don?t know anything about his past, but by the way he acts, he must not have been socialized a lot, but rather handled roughly with little touch or care for his emotional well-being.Skipper is smart, and he knows right from wrong, but he likes to defy rules whenever he can. He walks on a leash, but he has to wear a harness and, still, at times a drag-leash, as otherwise it is difficult to ?catch? him inside the house, impossible outside. He is crate trained and house trained for the most part, but he will still mark. He is overjoyed when his family (adult foster parents) come home, wildly wagging his tail, dancing like most chihuahuas do, but only allows himself to be pet on his head, always staying away just far enough to keep his whole body out of reach. He loves to be around and be part of the house dog pack, consisting of small breed dogs, but he also likes to challenge one or the other at times until an argument breaks out. He enjoys being close to people he knows (emphasize on knowing, as it takes him a while to trust new ones), but not close-up. If ?reeled in?, it?s not difficult to pick him up, but he absolutely does not enjoy being held, either in arms on a lap. When not allowed to jump off quickly, he never really relaxes, but looks away, pushes off with his legs and paws and when pet, will duck and show all the signs of having been negatively handled in his former life.He is generally rather quiet, but he does grumble a lot, and if needed, barks as well as the rest of the bunch.
Still, with all the opposites that make up Skipper, he has come a long way already from the terrified little guy who came into the shelter, not able to deal with his situation at all, hiding into himself, no interest in anything at all, so depressed that it did not take him days but weeks to start coming around to the now, the path forward, the will to want to be a happier and positive little dog.If you are interested in a challenging but rewarding life with Skipper, give us a call so we can forward your contact information to the foster, for more details.
