Adopt a Rat Terrier

Rat Terrier Dog

Comet the Dog needs a home

Rat Terrier Mix, male, 4 years, 14.7 lbs.

Dog Name: Comet

Suspected Breed(s): Rat Terrier mix

Gender: Male

Age: 4 years

Weight: 20 lbs

Personality: Affectionate, Quick Learner, Gentle, Trainable, Protective, Smart, Eager to please, Loyal, Shy, Snuggler, Playful

Observations with Dogs: Good with other dogs, ideally a dog his size or smaller. He has gotten along well with other dogs that stayed at his foster home and has enjoyed playing with them.

Observations with Cats: Good with cats that are not timid of dogs. The foster home he has been living in prior to coming to DC had cats that he interacted with regularly.

Observations with Kids: Comet can be shy and a bit nervous when meeting new people, so we don't think young children in the home would make him comfortable at this time.

House Training Progress: Making progress

Crate Training Progress: Does not like the crate. He does not sleep in a crate in his current foster home and does fine in a dark room with a radio playing in the background. During the day, Comet has been fine when left loose with the resident dog at home for up to five hours.

Location: DC area foster

Rescued From: Smyth County, VA

Additional Information: Comet is an incredibly sweet fellow who greets his foster mom with vigorous tail wags and lots of kisses! We don't think he was showed a whole lot of love in his past life, but he has already made such great strides and we think he will only continue to show love, loyalty and affection with the more love he is shown. He can be a bit nervous when meeting new people, but once he warms up he is so loyal and affectionate. Comet would do best in a home rather than a condo or apartment, as he will bark at sounds from the hallway. Comet would thrive in a calm, consistent environment with the guidance of a loving family, and ideally another canine pal to hang out with. Apply for this little guy today!

If you are interested in meeting a dog, we require an adoption application. Visit www.citydogsrescuedc.org/adopt.html to apply. If a dog has "HAS APPLICATION" listed, they are still available to receive additional applications but also may be in the process of being adopted soon.

If a dog has "NEEDS FOSTER" listed, they are still available for adoption. Information about our current dogs in need of fosters can be found here: www.citydogsrescuedc.org/current-dogs-in-need-of-a-foster.html and the application to foster is here: www.citydogsrescuedc.org/foster.html.

City Dogs Rescue is a foster based rescue in Washington, DC. We do not have a shelter. We focus on local adoptions in DC and the metro area of Maryland and Virginia. CDR has a thorough adoption process in order to find the best possible fit for each of our dogs (we do not operate under a first-come, first-served model).

Prior to arrival, all of our dogs are spayed/neutered (unless specified) and given shots for Rabies, Distemper DHPP, and Bordatella. They are tested for Heartworm, Lyme, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia. They are dewormed at least twice and given a health check by the vet.  Most dogs will have a house training accident in the initial days in their new home and we cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken or crate trained. Our adoption fee is $395 (including puppies) unless noted -- senior dogs are available for an adoption fee of $200.

We do our best to disclose all health records and known health conditions to adopters. Upon accepting a new cat or dog into the organization, we provide a basic vet visit that includes necessary vaccinations and health tests, but does not provide a comprehensive medical exam prior to adoption. As a result, sickness, injury, and disability may exist unbeknownst to CDR & CK.  City Dogs Rescue & City Kitties is not responsible for payment of any vet care, including known and unknown medical conditions once a cat or dog is adopted from us.

We also update our
