Adopt a German Shepherd Dog / Husky
Millie the Dog needs a home
But Millie is living in a MOGS foster home now, and learning to enjoy the good life!
TEMPERAMENT
Millie is a very loving and sweet girl with good medium energy. She bonds quickly to her people, and once that happens, she starts to show some typical GSD protective behaviors.
Due to significant trauma in her past, Millie is a bit of a shy girl, who can still startle when approached unexpectedly, and she does sometimes "mouth" if this happens. She also cowers at times, especially if someone is leaning over her with raised hands. This behavior is being diligently worked on in her foster home, but does take some time to correct, and will need continued work in an adoptive home.
Millie has learned some basic commands, and is currently having good success learning potty training. She is also working on kennel training, and has made considerable progress. This has been a hard one for her, as she much prefers to be near her person(s).
OTHER ANIMALS
Millie does well with dogs her same size or smaller. Her anxieties make it difficult for her to interact with larger, more assertive or hyper dogs. She prefers to have slow and controlled introductions, so that she knows that she is still safe, but once she connects, she enjoys hanging out, playing, or just relaxing with, her dog buddies. She will need another dog in her adoptive home, who can be laid back and calm with her.
Millie is a very curious girl when it comes to cats, and may chase them out of a desire to play or interact with them. She appears to have some "mothering" instincts with baby kittens, and will clean and "talk" to them. She also has tested calm with horses.
CHILDREN
Millie still needs work on her confidence level, and does not like to be unexpectedly startled, so will only be adopted into a home with children over the age of 12+, who are experienced being around shy dogs. No exceptions.
MEDICAL
Millie has trouble with recurring ear infections, that requires treatment a few times each year. This will need to continue to be monitored post-adoption. She also has a tendency to undereat due to anxiety, so her weight needs to be monitored as well.
THE IDEAL FAMILY for Millie will be a home that is fairly calm and laid back, with no young children, and with an owner who is familiar with handling the behavior of shy dogs in a calm, gentle manner, with lots of encouragement.
DOGS: Yes. Likes other dogs but is uncomfortable with those who get right in her face. Needs slow introductions for now to make sure she knows she's still safe.
CATS: Curious about cats, but appears to be safe with them.
KIDS: Yes. In foster with older kids. Can NOT be placed in a home with children under the age of 12.
If you're looking for a stunning and sweet-natured companion to be by your side and love you forever,
Millie may be your ideal family member!
MILLIE'S ADOPTION FEE: $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
