Adopt a German Shepherd Dog (medium coat)
Apollo the Dog needs a home
APOLLO ~1 year old. Good with older teenagers and dogs. Not good with cats. Needs a companion animal.
GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only
Let’s get reacquainted with Apollo! Apollo is back with GSRA after a trial adoption that turned out to not be a good fit. We’ve since then learned some things about what IS a good fit, and that’s where YOU come in! Apollo’s perfect home includes one or more dog-savvy adults who can help young Apollo make good choices and a playful doggie buddy who can act as a role model and playmate. Apollo’s perfect home does NOT include a kitty or children younger than age 15. If your home fits those criteria, please keep reading!
Not only is Apollo absolutely adorable, with that single floppy ear, but he also has the personality and temperament to match. He loves people, attention, and especially belly rubs! If you’re offering belly rubs, he will almost instantly become your BFF—no matter how many BFFs he already has. He loves going for walks and hikes, and has the nice leash manners needed to make these fun for the human, too. He’s also well-mannered and non-destructive in the house—remarkably so for such a young dog. He’s not fond of the vacuum cleaner but responds to it by trying to avoid it rather than challenge it, as a more confident dog might do. In fact, lack of confidence is the one thing Apollo needs a little help with—he needs a human who is attuned to him and can recognize when something makes him uncomfortable, and will let him know that you ‘have his back.’ An example of something that might make him uncomfortable is having “non-pack” humans in his house. He’s completely fine about this most of the time, but sometimes he may need a little extra space in this situation (heck, I sometimes need more space from house guests, too!); your job as his person is to recognize this and make sure he gets the space he needs. A confident doggie buddy will also help with this, as well as help burn off some of Apollo’s young-dog energy.
Cats are a no-go for Apollo because of his high prey drive. Speaking of drive, Apollo has SERIOUS ball-drive. He’s one of the few dogs I’ve seen who runs as hard on the return trip as he does when chasing after it, because bringing it back to you ASAP is how it’s going to get thrown again—smart boy, that Apollo. Unless your throwing arm has as much stamina as a young GSD, I recommend investing in a Chuck-it.
Apollo is just over a year old and has mastered basic obedience commands but needs a person or family who will continue to work with him to build confidence and experience with the world. If you can be this person for Apollo, he will pay you back 10-fold with love, laughter, and enthusiasm.
