Adopt a Domestic Short Hair (short coat)

Elvira the Cat needs a home
We welcome specific questions. Due to high volume of applications, we may not be able to respond immediately. Your patience is appreciated.
If an animal is on our website, it is still available but might have other applicants. If you find yourself interested in one of our animals, it is in your best interest to submit an application immediately. Submitting an application does not commit you to any animal, but does get you a head start with the adoption approval process.
We do not schedule meetings until you have an approved application.
As an all-volunteer, foster home based organization, ARF does not have a facility where applicants can visit our animals. The majority of our dogs and cats are brought to adoption events by our volunteers. We invite everyone to come to our events, but we must give priority to pre-approved applicants.
Female, spayed, about 2 to 3 years old (as of September 2017), microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, currently in a foster home, special “momcat” adoption fee $90.
Elvira was rescued from a kill shelter and almost immediately had her 8 kittens; 6 black like their mom and 2 charcoal grey. The average litter size for cats is 3-5, so with having 8 kittens Elvira really had her work cut out for her. Elvira was an exceptional mom who was very caring and patient with her babies. Her babies are grown and all but one has been adopted. Now it is Elvira’s turn to find her forever home. Elvira can be shy at first and although she is not a huge cuddler yet, she does crave attention via petting. She asks to be petted by meowing so sweetly. She does love to be stroked down her back and tail, and having her neck and chin rubbed. She responds to the petting by wanting to eat, so she may need to be limited in the amount of food per day. She prefers dry food. She is a very mellow cat and has the cutest little meow which she uses to call to her foster mom at meal times and whenever she wants attention. She gets along with other cats, barely noticing them unless they try to play too rough with her. Then she might growl at them, but she is never aggressive. Initially she was not very fond of having dogs around her, but after months in her foster home she is now ok with being around the dogs and even sleeps on the same Chaise as them (see the updated picture with her canine foster sister). Now that she no longer needs to care for her kittens, she is enjoying some mom free time. She enjoys hanging out on the cat tree, on the chaise, or on the back of the couch. If you want a nice, sweet, older cat, Elvira is a great choice.
If you are interested in meeting Elvira, you can fill out an online adoption application at http://www.arf-il.org/application.html Once your application has been approved, an ARF volunteer will contact you to arrange a meeting with the cat. Filling out the application does not obligate you in any way. (SP)
