A Little Bit About Me
Charley is a friendly adult Kelpie mix who is looking for a great home. He is pretty mellow but also has that herding drive that makes him want to organize other animals and possibly smaller people. He always looks like he is asking a question with one ear up and one down, but he seems to know a lot of things like sit, down, shake, speak. This proves he has had some good relationships with people who took the time to teach him.
Herding dogs need to have lots of things to do and think about to keep them from worrying about what to do. They might dream up some unwanted behaviors if left to only their own devices. He is not as active as he probably once was, but he would still do best with enough physical exercise to tire him out (build him up to it) as well as mental stimulation (generally that means training). We don't have any information about him being able to express his abilities of working with other animals. He might want to take that up as a hobby with you. It is an astonishing experience to witness a dog finding his own purpose, working sheep or cattle. But again, he's not a youth and he might be happily occupied doing a good job of Nose Work (scenting), which involves innate talents as well.
One advantage to adopting a mature dog is that you get a dog who is already who he is. If you have children around, yours or other's, be sure to observe if he is too "herdy nerdy" and controlling with them. He has been tolerant and social with us.
Around other dogs he gets frustrated when he is on leash and pushy when allowed to interact. It is hard to be in charge of other dogs, and he takes it seriously even if they are not so happy about it. With smaller dogs he didn't care where they went and was not particularly interested in them one way or the other.
Maybe Charley would like to live his early retirement life with you. You will find him a great guy to be around.
