Adopt a Chihuahua / Mixed (long coat)
Gomez the Dog needs a home
**Gomez is being fostered in the Pennington, NJ area.**
Gomez and his mother, Rosa, were found living at a local dumpster site in December 2016. From all indications, we could tell that they both had been there for quite some time, possibly even being feral (born in the wild) as both were totally un-socialized towards humans. In fact, we had to use a small dog trap to capture both of them.
It took approximately 9 months before Gomez would even allow us to touch him. He has never been aggressive towards us, never has attempted to bite, but he would run from us and struggle to get away when we attempted to hold him. Even now, a little over a year later, he is still very apprehensive towards people he doesn't know but he does allow those of us that he's gotten familiar with to pick him up. At times he even remains sitting in our lap and seems to enjoy the attention that he receives.
While we are very patient with him, Gomez isn't going to progress any further unless he finds a home with someone who is also very patient with him and can give him more one on one time than we're able to do. We're hoping that such a person, who is very experienced with extremely timid dogs, finds it in their heart to give him a chance and offers him a home of his own.
Gomez does enjoy the company of other dogs and has interacted very well with a number of them during his time at SoCo. In fact, Gomez and Rosa serve as sort of our welcoming committee and host to other small dogs and puppies. Both began making progress with their acceptance of people after they began to see those other dogs and puppies interacting with us.
While seemingly very attached to his mother, we have had them separated at times to see how both would do. As long as Gomez has had another dog to interact with, he seems to adjust well to not having his mom with him at all times. Of course if we can find an adopter that is willing to keep them together then we'd surely welcome that offer. The ideal home for Gomez should be one without small children or a lot of people coming and going as he regresses when too many "new" people are present or if there is a lot of noise for him to content with. His adopter has to understand that gaining his trust will not be a simple task but once they do, the effort will be well worth it.
Gomez has been fully vetted, is current on all of his vaccinations and monthly preventative as well as being heart worm free. He isn't house trained and will need work to become so.
Gomez is a wonderful little fellow who deserves a chance at life outside of living at a rescue. If you truly think you can offer Gomez the home that he deserves, then please submit an application at socorescue.com
