Popplio has been cleared for ADOPTION -- SF Bay Area of CA
You can follow her on Instagram @popplio_pokepup
Popplio is a 7 lb Chihuahua and Terrier Mix who came to us in May as a wee little puppy from San Jose Animal Care Center via San Jose Animal Advocates and Tails of a Shelter Vet
She is now 5 months old and has been spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated and had her inguinal hernia repaired. She has also been going to physical therapy sessions and having ultrasound treatments at A Well Adjusted Pet to loosen her joints, muscles and ligaments and is now able to use her legs for support. She runs well and is full of energy, but isn't able to extend her legs
Popplio was born with a birth defect that caused her back legs to not function correctly. When she came into our program, Popplio's rear legs were splayed to the sides. She now uses them but they are "crunched up" like her foster brother says. Her bone anatomy is normal on x-ray and her veterinary team thinks that her tendons and ligaments did not form correctly and do not stretch the way they should that would make her legs look and work normally.
It just is how she is. She does not know or care, so we do not spend time feeling sorry for her because she does not feel sorry for herself. While it is a possibility that she may need a wheelchair later in life, for now she gets around just fine.
Popplio is a fun, spunky, affectionate puppy. She loves to play with other dogs and with people, but also appreciates a good cuddle when she's ready to rest. She has been raised with cats, dogs of all sizes and children and we think she would do fine in a family with other pets and dog savvy children (just because she is a puppy).
Popplio loves to explore and play outside, she can run as fast as some of her foster companions, but too much time on rough surfaces can result in sores on her rear feet. We're looking into boots to protect her feet so she's able to go for more walks without injury.Because we don't know why her legs are the way they are, we cannot predict how they might change as she continues to grow and develop. We'll show adopters the stretches she's been doing so they can continue to keep those legs stretched out and moving as well as possible.
Popplio loves feet, she spends a lot of time sitting between the feet of her foster family. She loves toys of all kinds and races around carrying them. She'll play chase and tug and has plenty of kisses to share. She enjoys digging and burrowing in the sand at the beach, we're working on her leash walking. She'd be happy to go on hikes, but would prefer to ride in your backpack or a sling carrier. She currently uses pee pads but is also learning to go outside to do her business
We are looking for an adopter who is willing to help maintain/grow her social media presence in order to promote the adoptions of pets with special needs. Training and support provided for the technology-challenged
She is located in the SF Bay Area of CA and we are always willing to adopt to people who are willing to travel to us. Thanks to a lovely sponsorship by the Hudson family, we may be able to help with transporting her elsewhere HOWEVER, we are not Amazon and do not provide door-to-door shipping services to someone not willing to lift a finger (you need to be willing to help coordinate the process). We also do not use unregulated, multi-leg transports.
We would be THRILLED to do whatever needed to pair her with a child with a similar condition.
To make a tax-deductible donation towards her care, please do so online at www.paypal.me/UOH

Umbrella of Hope does not have any strict rules on ages of children because all children are different, but our best approximation is that this animal would do best with children over the age of 5
Umbrella of Hope is a non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals off death row from local shelters. We offer rebates of adoption fees after completion of obedience classes and CGC titles.
Also, ask us about our seniors for seniors program, where we adopt animals 5 years or older to qualified homes with a $5 donation as an adoption fee. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites and given any additional treatments (dental work, bloodwork etc) as recommended by our vet. Some of our senior animals have sponsorships for their food/vet care/medicine for the rest of their life at our vet in Pittsburg, CA (94565)
