Tony - Yellow male, 1 year old
Nice to meet you everyone! My name is Tony and I am excited to get to know you better! I am a very special boy – sweet and snuggly and smart as can be! I love young children and am a friend to everyone I meet. I am a classic happy & handsome Labrador, but I was born with a medical condition called Mega-Esophagus. Mega-Esophagus (MegaE) is a generalized enlargement of the esophagus which makes it hard for liquids to move down to my stomach. My case is relatively minor and the only thing I cannot do is drink water like other dogs. Instead, my foster mom soaks my food in water to make a thick soup 3-4 times a day and this is how I stay hydrated. I cannot drink water from a bowl or be around open water as my esophagus cannot get water to my tummy properly. Other than that pesky MegaE, I am a normal happy go-lucky boy with no other health problems. I know my MegaE will make it harder for me to find my forever family, but I am sure hoping you are out there somewhere!
I love people and am a very friendly well-socialized boy. I am extremely smart and know a variety of basic commands. I am fully crate-trained and house-trained and have excellent house manners. I love playing with other dogs and children and I am patient and gentle with even the smallest children. I do need to avoid activity in the heat, as I can get dehydrated very quickly since I cannot have water like a regular dog. I would love to find a forever family where my people are home a lot so they can take care of me and feed me my special meal several times a day. I think a home on the coast or in the mountains where I can be more comfortable and stay hydrated would be a great fit for me. I have a lot of love to give and can’t wait to find a forever family to share my life with. I know my health issues are a challenge, but I don’t let them get me down – I won’t let anything get in the way of my happiness!
Tony is the sweetest boy with a huge heart full of love. He is a true inspiration and always tries to live life to the fullest despite his health challenges. Unfortunately, there is no cure for Mega-Esophagus, but Tony’s case is mild and can be managed well by feeding him 3-4 times a day and soaking these meals in water to keep him hydrated. Tony cannot have free-standing water around (i.e. no water dish, pools, lakes, etc.). Tony would do very well in a cooler climate, where dehydration is not as much of a risk. Tony is a true sweetheart who deserves a family to call his own and love forever. If you are interested in making Tony a member of your family, please take some time to research Mega Esophagus prior to applying. This loving boy is so deserving of a life full of happiness and comfort – if you can provide Tony with the life of care and love he needs, please apply today at www.labrescuefresno.org.
