Adopt a German Shepherd Dog
Mya the Dog needs a home
1) Mya has orthopedic issues that will require her adoptive family to maintain both a special joint support diet, as well as consistent daily exercise to maintain strong muscle tone in her back and hips.
MYA was picked up as a stray in SE Missouri, and came to MOGS through transfer from another Rescue.
TEMPERAMENT
Mya is a very sweet two year-old female who loves to be around people. She is not a velcro dog, but more of a "ranger" - she checks in on her people, plays for a bit, does a lap of the house, may check on her people again, then lies down somewhere where she can still keep an eye on what's going on. She also enjoys romping around pulling out all of her toys, and herding them onto her bed for naptime. She has no issues with food or resource guarding, and easily allows her humans to take her food bowl, treats and toys, with no issues.
Mya is a super-smart girl, and is learning basic commands very quickly in her foster home. She almost has "sit" sorted out, and is also working on wait, free, here (recall command) and down. She does need more work on leash manners, as she is very curious and pulls fairly hard when she enters new situations. Mya is crate-trained, but sometimes tries to slip out, just in case you didn't really mean she had to stay. It's super hard for her to be in her crate when she know her people are home, so she can sometimes be very vocal about wanting out. Once her foster parents leave, however she does just fine. Her people coming home is a super exciting time, and she creates tasmanian devil-like tornadoes as she whirls in excitement. She is working hard o learn to sit and wait calmly to be let out.
OTHER ANIMALS
Mya lives in a foster home with both dogs and cats, and has been safe with both. She has done okay at public events, but requires slow, supervised introductions, as opposed to a quick walk-up greeting. Overall, Mya does not appear to engage in dominant behaviors with other dogs in the home, and tends to avoid disagreements.
CHILDREN
Mya has done fairly well with children of all ages. However, she does not tolerate hyperactive children, or people who get into her face, and will indicate her displeasure by backing away and quietly growling.
Due to this, Mya will only be allowed to be adopted into a home with children 10-12+, who are familiar with how to behave safely and calmly around large dogs.
MEDICAL
Mya is an overall very healthy dog. She does have a congenital condition in her back right hip, where she does not have an appropriate socket for her femoral head. Over time, this will likely require medical intervention to alleviate both chronic pain and compensatory gait problems. Until that point, she is required to be on a special diet of food containing joint support additives, as well as joint supplements. Daily exercise, to keep the muscles of her back legs and hips well developed, will also delay any further medical intervention.
Mya came to MOGS Heartworm +, and is currently undergoing treatment for this issue. This treatment will be completed prior to Mya being adopted.
MYA'S ADOPTION FEE: $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
