Adopt a Jack Russell Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat)
Hugo (HW+) the Dog needs a home
Thank you for your interest in dog who needs a new home. Adoption can be one of the most fulfilling experiences in your life and especially in the life of your new canine companion.
A note to those looking at CPR. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. Our job is to find those someone's. Our most successful adopters come to CPR not because they want a dog. They come to us because they want to give a dog a home. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. While we like to know what you like in looks, a dog is more than a pretty face. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.
Our descriptions contain all that we know about this dog today. We'll update as more information is known.
Are you looking to adopt within the next 30 days? If so please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and complete the application. You'll find it in the menu on the left hand side. You'll also find a total listing of all our dogs available.

Special Needs? Hugo is heartworm positive (HW+). He will be sent home with a year supply of heartworm medication. He is being treated with a method called the slow kill treatment. He takes a monthly Ivermectin based heartworm preventative and needs to be re-tested for heartworms every 6 months. Once he tests negative, then he can take any kind of heartworm preventative; he is not restricted to Ivermectin based only. PLEASE NOTE our heartworm positive dogs MUST be kept on this method of treatment. Make sure to talk with you vet about this method before submitting an application.

Height: Estimated 11 in at the shoulder
Spayed/Neutered: Yes
Adoption Fee: $200
Fence needed? A fence would be great until I learn to leash walk.
What kind of home would be best for me? I need a home with sweet people willing to love on me once I warm up to them. Hugo would make a great dog for a person that enjoys independent dogs that knows how to keep themselves happy.
What is my personality like? I was found in another state and brought to one of their rural shelters as a stray. My past is unsure but I would love to find a family to help me forget all of the bad stuff. I am head shy. If you come at me to fast with your hand I will tuck down because it startles me. I am very curious and love to explore my surroundings. When I first came to CPR, I was very timid and needed a lot of work. Since Hugo has been with us, we have noticed he is a very head strong type of guy. He does not look for anyone else's opinion and has his own little mind. Hugo is a very loving and hyper boy. He loves to play, but can sometimes be too much for other dogs, which Hugo does not like. This means that Hugo needs to be in a home with a dog that is alright with his energy and goofy personality, or a home with no dogs. He absolutely loves all people and will take a belly rub from anyone. Hugo will become a relaxed and lazy boy once he has a little bit of playing time out of his system.
Update 1/23/2018: The longer Hugo is here, the more of a love bug/ attention hog he becomes! All he needed was a little time to settle down from the drastic change in his life. He hits the floor every morning full of life and ready to be outside in the sun. Hugo loves to play with humans, He likes to pounce at you trying to initiate a game of tag. This boy will be after your own heart. Note that he only gets along with certain dogs. He is working hard turning his charm up a notch to get noticed, he wants a home!
How do I act when I first meet new people? Friendly but shy.
Other tips and tidbits: I don't care much for treats or toys so far.
House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
