Adopt a Feist / Mixed (short coat)
Jade the Dog needs a home
Most of us have that "dream dog breed" that we've always wanted in our lives, growing up, thinking about the future... and some of us never learn to see the value in mixed breeds that make up 90% or more of shelter dogs... We ask that you take a step back and reopen your mentality about these dogs. After all, their dream is just to have a place to call home, and a family to love.
Jade is one of those dogs. We've had quite a bit of time to be with her, learning who she is, what she likes and what she doesn't, all of her quirks, and in that time, we've gained her trust enough that she has learned to settle down with us. We want to see that for her in her home. We don't want her to think that this is the only place for her.
When we first met Jade, she was on guard. And she knows how to let people know that. She doesn't want strangers to just reach down at her and handle her - and why would she? She still can be like this, and it is something that her forever home will have to learn to respect of her, while trying to show her that not all strangers are bad. Jade is much more comfortable with us, and allows petting all the time - in fact, she pretty much demands it! She will pull your arm to her with her front paws to let you know when she wants attention. We've been working with her on the pushiness, and she has learned that sitting down and giving the puppy eyes instead, is really what is going to get her the attention she wants. Jade does like to eat her food or chew on her treats in her own space. We would recommend that she has an area in her home specific for that, somewhere private where she does not feel threatened by anyone leaning down near her things.
Jade can have a "stranger danger" mentality with other dogs, as well. She tends to get along a lot better around dogs that are much larger than her, and don't react to her initial behavior to them. She just feels that she needs to be the "big dog" at first, and once she realizes that she is going to be okay, she settles down and tolerates them just fine. Jade also has lived with a few cats, and does well with our resident cat.
We've watched Jade change since she first arrived, and she has definitely worked her way into our hearts. We'd love for someone else to accept her as she is, too.
