Adopt a Hound / Mixed (short coat)

UPDATE 9/23/17: 

On 11/20/16 Henry was found at the side of a road by two women passing by in their car.  He was emaciated and very sick with Lyme, Ehrlichia, hookworms, and whip worms.  His boney ribs and under belly were completely bare of hair.  Had we not gotten him when we did, he would have frozen to death, or died of starvation and disease! After top notch medical care, his illnesses were cured and he was neutered.  

Henry is now a handsome, healthy, tri-color Hound who weighs 54 pounds and seems to be about 3 ½ years old.  A very sweet but shy dog, he loves being around other dogs and he wants to get to know them all.  With other dogs, he enters his comfort level and becomes very playful.  He kisses other dogs through the fence and prances and play bows to invite them all to join in play with him.  Even when he was so sick and skinny, there was “a playful little dog” inside him.

Henry and Brent were roommates for a while.  Brent is a bit shyer than Henry, but when Henry let someone pet him, Brent let that person pet him too.  Henry’s “mentoring of Brent” in the ways of accepting human affection has done a lot to help Brent begin to come out of his shell too.  Dogs helping dogs is a wonderful thing.  Henry has had several other roommates, but one by one they have all gotten adopted.   

Though shy, Henry is never vicious. He is a sweet, gentle soul that very well tolerated all of the medical prodding and poking he received when we first got him.  Now that he has grown to know those of us at the shelter, he has even kissed a couple of us very gently on the nose.  He also will put his paw on us asking for “more affection, please.”  Our “dog therapy group” has been working with Henry for a few hours each week and will be happy to personally show you how he has grown to trust us.  Henry has all the makings of being someone’s very beloved pet that just wants to stay at home and lounge around with his people and a dog friend. 

He will do best in a calm adult home in a quiet community with a securely fenced yard and people who will give him the time necessary to grow to trust them.  He would enjoy another mellow doggie playmate too, because he needs one for his self-confidence and the fun dog games he likes to play.
