Adopt a Bluetick Coonhound / Mixed
Amy Lou the Dog needs a home

Hi Everyone! My name is Amy Lou and I am listed as a blue tick coonhound mix (my foster mom thinks I am mixed with a beagle and I definitely show the characteristics of a beagle). I am about a year and a half years old and I am fully grown at about 30-35 pounds (depends on how much I ate that day). I came from a local shelter where I was scheduled to be euthanized because I was shut down and scared of everything and everyone (who can blame me, the shelters a scary place!). But thankfully my foster mom took a chance on me and once I got into my foster home, I became a completely different dog. This is what my foster mom has learned about me since being in her home;
I am fully potty trained. When I first got into my foster home I had a few accidents in the house (my foster mom says it may have something to do with the fact that I was in a shelter), but since I got the hang of things and got used to the routine, I no longer have accidents in the house.
I am also crate trained. I go in my crate when my foster mom goes to work and will sometimes go in there and lay down on my own ( I currently live with 5 other dogs so it gets a little crazy at times). When it’s time for me to go in there, all my foster mom has to do is say kennel up and I will run right in there and wait for her to close the door (she also gives me a treat which helps)! And when it’s time to eat, I eat in my kennel. I do have a little bit of guarding issues when it comes to food, but as long as I’m fed in my kennel, I’m perfectly fine. My foster mom doesn’t even have to lock me in there anymore.
I get along well with other dogs, but don’t like to play rough, so if they start to play rough I will get a little scared and will growl at them. The shelter told my foster mom that in my old home, I used to get beat up pretty bad by the other resident dog, so she thinks this may be why I don’t like to play rough. But I am easily redirected. I also do pretty well with cats. I sometimes like to chase the cats so if my forever home has cats, they should be dog savvy.
I love to play with my dog toys. I love the interactive treat toys. They are my favorite! They keep me busy for hours! I also get to sleep in my foster mom’s bed. When she tells me its bedtime, I jump right up there and find a spot to sleep and will sleep there all night until it’s time to wake up.
I do get a little scared around new people if they come into my home. I will bark at them (and I have the typical beagle bark). I’m getting better at this as my foster mom is having more and more strangers come in so I get used to it, but this is something my forever family should continue to work with me on. I am fine when we go out in public (like PetSmart or the dog park) it’s just when someone comes into my home. I’m not mean to them, I’m just scared. But if you let me do it on my own terms, I will warm up to them a little if they are there for a while.
I don’t know how to do tricks on command. Not even sit. My foster mom is trying to teach me, but with so many dogs in the house, it can be tough sometimes. But she thinks with time and consistently, I will eventually learn how to sit on command.
I like to sometimes bark for no reason. Well my foster mom thinks it’s for no reason, but trust me, there’s a reason! My foster mom gets a little annoyed with me when I do this. But she got me this collar that she can beep and whenever I bark she will beep it and I stop barking. I’m getting better at the not barking thing the longer I am in my foster home because I get used to the different noises, but my forever family should be aware of this and know that I may be a bit vocal when I first get there.
Little kids are not my favorite. So if there are kids in my home, they should be older/respectable kids and we will need proper introductions.
I can also jump! My foster mom has this extra tall baby gate to keep us from going into the entry way so we don’t charge at someone when they come to the door, but I can just jump right over it. I do have a 4’ fenced in yard but I haven’t tried to jump that, but if you do have a fence, you should probably keep an eye on me when I’m outside the first few weeks until I get comfortable in the home and to make sure I don’t try and jump it. Otherwise I should be on a tie out or on a leash when I am outside.
A note from my foster mom;
Amy Lou is a very good girl who has a lot of love to give. She has had a difficult past, which you can tell by some of her behaviors. But with a caring, understanding, and patient forever family, she would be the perfect addition! She wants to be loved and wants to trust new people, it just takes her a little time. She’s more of a submissive type dog, so I think she would greatly benefit if there was another, calm dog in the home to help her get over some of her fears. She has shown a lot of improvement since she’s been with me and I think she will continue to make progress with the right forever home.
