Pappy Van Winkle the Dog needs a home
Pappy Van Winkle (Wink) is a goofy, lovable boy who just wants a family to follow around, play with, and snuggle with on the couch (or floor). He would do great as the only pet, but would also LOVE a doggy sibling. His ideal family is patient, gentle, and willing to provide him training and structure so he can thrive as a perfect companion.
Wink was found as a stray, presumably hit by a car, although the actual cause of his condition is unknown. He lost the use of his rear legs and was unable to walk for several months, but has regained mobility and now zips around. He walks a little funny, but we just call it Wink swagger. Sometimes he loses his balance and takes a tumble every now and then, but he gets right back up and keeps moving!
He’s good with dogs with supervision. He’s pushy and still learning dog cues, so we’ve been working on boundaries when his foster brother wants to be left alone. He is very friendly and just wants to play; even if his foster brother growls or snips, Wink just wags his tail and tries to give kisses.
He’s good with cats. He followed our cat around for the first few days but now completely ignores him—much more interested in dogs and people!
He’s been great with kids when exposed. He loves to give kisses and can get jumpy, so needs to be supervised with small kids who he could unintentionally knock down.
He loves the dog park and meeting new dogs on walks. He walks very well on leash until he spots another person or dog, and then his mission in life at that moment is to go say hello as quickly as possible.
He really likes his crate. He sleeps all night without making a peep, and is crated during the work day with no problem. We leave the crate door open when we are home and he willingly goes in to hang out or chew bones.
He holds his potty all day in the crate and does his business as soon as he goes outside. He is still learning how to tell you when he needs to go out, but does very well with a consistent potty schedule.
Wink really just wants to be loved by people and dogs. He needs a little training to help him with the basic stuff and we think he really deserves that! He gets so happy when he knows his people are happy with him. Nothing breaks his spirits (except maybe when the dog park is empty).
