Sweet Pea the Dog needs a home
We have been fostering Sweet Pea for about 7 months, she came to us as a rescue from a puppy mill and it seems she was separated from her mother way too early. Very smart, overflowing with energy and often very very sweet, Sweet Pea has a fear of people outside our home, and a fear of new dogs. When we first got her, she bit two people who picked her up. She was trying to get away from them in fear and she turned and bit them when they insisted on picking her up. Not surprising. She hasn't bitten anyone since, but remains very tentative and fearful with strangers-she runs away and growls if you look her in the eyes. She as gotten very markedly better since we've had her. We have had a few people- dog behaviorists and a pet sitter visit and she has become relaxed and friendly with them all after about 3-4 visits. She barks sometimes and her bark is very shrill. She occasionally races around the room snarling and jumping and at first this freaked me out a bit but I spoke to a Havanese dog breeder who said this was normal puppy behavior for this breed, its their way of letting off steam. Sweet Pea definitely needs socialization, and patience, and discipline. These are the difficulties. The upside is that she is an extremely affectionate, wickedly smart, and a very very playful burst of love and puppy dog energy. She will be an amazing pet for the right person. She could be trained I think as a search and rescue dog because she can be very focused and tenacious with her toys and when she is digging, fetching, reaching for food scraps or chewing a bone. Very trainable, she learns commands quickly and is eager to please.
