Ozzie the Dog needs a home

The girl with the big, brown “look at me” eyes in this picture is Ozzie! We believe Ozzie is a 1.5 year old bully mix, who was pregnant at the time she was rescued by animal control and gave birth to a litter of puppies in the shelter (where they were all adopted, but she was left waiting for a home of her own). Our director was drawn to her because of what we now refer to as her “pitiful Ozzie pose.” You see, Ozzie is very smart. She'll use her puppy dog eyes to make you think she's miserable; however, she's simply trying to see if she can convince you to do what she wants!
Ozzie loves humans – if anything, she loves them too much! Before training, and if she’s not kept in check, wild Ozzie is persistent as she begs for pets and attention. However, even at peak energy, Ozzie is still a great dog, she can just be “too much” if she doesn’t get the structure and stimulation she needs!
Now that we've introduced more structure into Ozzie's life, she's a changed woman. She knows to sit before being let outside, to stay by our side during walks, and, most importantly, when enough is enough. Because Ozzie is smart and sly, she will thrive most with an adopter who is willing to put time into building a relationship with her. Once you and Ozzie are on the same wavelength, you will love her.
Ozzie is best suited for an individual or family who is physically active and has the time to work her brain. She'd be a great running or hiking partner and would love to help you train for your next race, triathlon, etc. To work her brain, you can play games with her, work on obedience, teach her new tricks; just fifteen minutes of brain work leaves her happy and ready for a nap. We're confident that she can learn just about any trick you want to teach her, so if "making a viral YouTube video" is on your bucket list, Oz can help you check that off. She might be too energetic for a home with very young children right now, but loves interacting with kids and we think she would acclimate well to a home with young children as she gets a little older and slows down.
Ozzie does get along with other dogs who don’t mind her enthusiasm, but with one caveat: she does not like strange new dogs coming into a home that she considers "hers." We routinely get great reports from her daycare and she loves playing and cuddling with her foster family’s dogs, but she'd go nuts whenever we had a new dog visit at home. This “friendly and social but territorial” behavior pattern is common in the black mouth cur breed (a cousin to Catahoula leopard dogs and Plott hounds), and if you google “black mouth cur mix” you will see several lookalikes listed as cur/bulldog or cur/pitbull mixes.
If our complicated-but-in-the-best-way girl sounds like the dog you've been looking for, please fill out an application and tell us about yourself! Ozzie is so eager to find her match! Her adopter will also have a complimentary consult with her trainer, Angela, to learn about best practices for working with Miss Oz!
