UPDATE 11/1/17:
Sweet Virginia (a stray from Animal Control) arrived in our shelter on 9/14/17. She appears to be a 15 month old Hound (mix) (she may have a little Whippet in her), and she weighs 45 pounds. She has very long, elegant legs. She has gained a little weight since these photos were taken and she looks much less worried now too.
Nobody knows the trouble she’s seen, but she is very timid. She cowers if you move too quickly around her but once she knows you she does warm up a little bit. She WANTS to trust people—it is just hard for her. She is roommates with Brent, another of our shy dogs, and they are very good friends. He is acting as her mentor. If he trusts someone, she tries to trust them too. She loves to run and play with him in one of our medium sized yards too. Once we leash him up to take him back inside, she will follow us in.
She doesn’t seem to have a mean bone in her body though. She lets us touch everyplace on her body and she doesn’t complain. We don’t let her run free in our biggest yard yet though, because she would not come back to us when it was time for her to go back inside.
We will write more about sweet Virginia as we get to know her. For now, we are working to help her with her self-confidence and teach her that from now on, her troubles are over. Our dog therapy group works with her on a weekly basis and she is getting better.
She does like, and wants and needs to be with, other dogs.
