VERY SWEET! A LITTLE SHY! LOVES OTHER DOGS!!!

UPDATE 10/5/17:

Brent came to us on 8/9/16.  He is about 2½ years old, weighs 50 pounds, and seems to be a Foxhound (mix).  He LOVES DOGS but is VERY SHY around people.  He has an adorable face but it is easy to see the worry behind his gentle brown eyes.  We can’t imagine why he is as tentative and shy as he is (perhaps he was feral) but he doesn’t seem to have a mean bone in his body.

Brent loves the shelter staff though. He especially perks up and has a great time when Scott goes in to clean Brent’s room first thing in the morning.  Scott has loved on Brent from day one and Brent trusts and loves Scott 100%.  Brent also loves all of the roommates he has had since he arrived.  They have all gotten adopted, and yet he remains.  Lots of people want him because of his very good looks BUT not many people are qualified to have a dog as shy as him.  If he would escape his new home (when he gets one), we fear he would never be caught again and would end up starving or freezing to death.  We just can’t let that happen to him.

For the past eight months our “dog therapy group” (Lish, Jodie, and Flower), have been working with him on a regular basis.  We use tiny bits of cheese, hot dogs, chicken, and other delicious things to entice him to come to us—and it has worked.  It has taken us a long time, but when he sees us coming now, his tail wags in total happiness and he smiles a big smile.  He now takes treats directly from our hands and he even enjoys leashed walks.  When he is on leash, he has no choice but to let us love on him.  Brent has fallen in love with Lish and he will actually come to her in the big yard now.  If she didn’t already have two dogs, she would adopt him AFTER she installs a taller fence in her yard.

Brent is VERY CLEAN in his room, indicating he’d be easy to house train.

Brent’s NEEDS:  Brent would do best in a CALM, ADULT HOME, with a SECURELY FENCED YARD and another dog or two to keep him company and help him with his self-confidence.  He must have people experienced with getting very shy dogs to trust them; people willing to give him the time he needs to learn how to relax in their environment.  A home without children who visit is a must, because if anyone leaves a gate or door open and he escapes, it will be nearly impossible to get him to come back home at this stage of his trust level.

GOOD WITH DOGS.
