Tabby / Domestic Short Hair / Mixed (short coat) Cat

Momma Kitty the Cat needs a home

DOB: 11/2014

Momma Kitty was found in August with a litter of 5 kittens roaming outdoors scrounging for food in Mar Vista.  She had been abandoned by her owner.  Over the course of the next few months, all 5 of her kittens were trapped and 4 were taken to the West LA Animal Shelter, where they were fixed and successfully put up for adoption.  The 5th kitten is currently in a home with a special needs older cat and his younger partner, and may be put up for adoption with Kitten Rescue as well.  While the kittens were assumed to be feral, they quickly responded to human contact and will make great pets.  Momma Kitty disappeared for days on end after all her kittens had been trapped, only to reappear days later to be fed in the area where her kittens had been trapped.  She was lured to the home of the rescuer with her kitten son, allowing the owner to pet her and continue feeding her outdoors.  Eventually, in October, she was able to be picked up and taken to a vet to be spayed.  She’s been kept indoors ever since, healing nicely from her surgery and demonstrating in her behavior that she once was an indoor cat, knowing how to use a litter box and play with toys, although at first she was afraid of them.  It is thought that she never had the opportunity to play with toys, she now loves playing and has relaxed significantly since being captured, seemingly knowing she is in a safe environment.  Momma Kitty will make a great pet.  She has not warmed up to the other two existing cats in the house (a special needs boy and his partner, a younger female), but is tolerant of their presence.  After capture she was put in a room with her son, who had been fixed weeks earlier, but too much time had passed and she rejected him during her convalescence in the rescuer’s home.  She might get along with other cats if given the chance.

Also, she is a very sweet cat who loves to be around people!

When she lived on the street she would sometimes get aggressive if not fed or petted, another neighbor said the former owners told him “she could be mean.”  I interpret that to mean that, being unfixed, she was probably in heat often and irritable.  My neighbor told me that the granddaughter of the owner would sell her kittens, so she clearly had numerous litters before the last one.  It’s a miracle she lasted as long as she did on the street, in fact, when the kittens were trapped it was thought that they were maybe 6 weeks old.  Turns out they were 12 weeks old, small, because of lack of food.  Again, she did very well for an abandoned Momma, raiding the neighbor’s outdoor dog food bowl to sustain her kittens!
