Please fill out an application form. DON'T fill out the email or other choices here. http://awos.petfinder.com/shelters/ON258.html has the application link on the front page. If we do not receive an application your email will be deleted. Our time is spent caring for these dogs, sometimes as many as 30 - 40 dogs at a time, and you show us serious intent to adopt when you take the time to fill out the application. Thank you for your understanding.
If there is a date next to the dog's name that is the expected arrival date. EVERYTHING we know about these dogs is on their bio. Please don't email asking for more info - we don't have any.
Please bookmark the site so YOU can check on the dog's status, updates if any etc. That's where we put everything we know about them.
We do not adopt to homes or apts on the main floor with no fenced area for the dog. They are a flight risk in the early weeks and we have the same goal - a safe, happy, healthy dog.
NOTE: WE DO NOT DO ADOPTIONS FROM DEC 17th to Dec 30. All our dogs go to foster homes so watch for updates and pics!
NOTE: WE WILL ONLY ADOPT TO PPL WITH SOLID GUARDING BREED EXPERIENCE
jan 17/18 Best dog in the world! Foster says
Wilbur is a 1 year old purebred Beauceron. Wilbur has been with me for just over a week and has been a great houseguest. Unlike most 1 year old dogs he does have an off switch! He knows that outside is fun time but inside we are calm.
He loves relaxing on the couch with his stuffed dog toys. He is a big boy and can easily take up 2 cushions. He will collect the toys and bring them up onto the couch with him for relax time. He is even good with sharing if my dog (Bella) wants to play with one.
Bella normally takes a bit of time to warm up to other dogs but Wilbur and her have been friends from the start. Wilbur is really good at picking up on her body language and not getting in her face.
Every morning when the alarm goes off Wilbur first looks at the phone (which is the alarm) and licks it then will come to me for morning snuggles and lots of kisses. Even when I am up before the alarm, he seems to wait until that noise before really getting excited. After a few moments when I tell him to lay down he does without any hesitation.
Wilbur rarely barks and when he does it is only a few times to alert me of someone. Wilbur doesn't crowd people at the door or try to run out the door. Wilbur is very smart and has only been told once not to go on my bed and hasn't tried since.
He enjoys walks and meeting people and dogs along the way. We have a few outdoor cats in my neighbourhood and he will look at them but then continue on his way. He loves racing around the yard with Bella trying to keep up while Wilbur takes time to eat snow (not the yellow snow) and any ice chucks he can find. Even though his leg is noticeable to people when running or playing it does not stop him from doing anything. He has no problem whatsoever going up or down stairs or jumping up into a high truck.
I rent out the basement of my house and they weren't even aware he was here for a few days as he doesn't make any noise. Wilbur is so well behaved, he comes when called, can sit on command, will let me take a toy and is so gentle when taking a treat. I absolutely love the happy go lucky feel that Wilbur has brought to the house and the joy that the simple things bring him. Wilbur is a dog that I will happily take with me to visit friends as he loves playing with their dogs and kids. Wilbur has lots of energy that needs to be exercised a lot. He needs to be with an active person or family.
Dec 28/17 We sent out boy to a foster home for the holidays. He was with an old malinios, a gsd and beagle mix of all things and the neighbour has one of our dogs to foster as well so he had plenty of play time. This is what the foster had to say:
Sweet 1 year old Wilbur is a super friendly guy who is always happy Fostering Wilbur this past week has been a lot of fun for this household. He is my first foster ever (I wasn’t sure what to expect from a big pup) but Wilbur has made the experience more enjoyable than I could have imagined. He is so respectful of everyone, even my grumpy old Malinois doesn’t mind him!! Hahaaa! He has a great temperament, loyal, curious, friendly, not afraid and is always taking in his surroundings.
I am a single guy with 3 male dogs ranging in ages of 4 to 13.5 years old. Wilbur enjoys the company of all other dogs that he meets. He can rough-house with the best of them, or crouch down pretending to be small to play with little ones. He loves to play with my beagle-cross as they roll around and kiss each other lol. When playtime is over, he is equally happy to curl up beside my chair and enjoy the calm...pretty awesome for such a young big boy
Wilbur is fabulous walking on a leash. He is not a puller and his Good Dog Collar would make it a breeze for anyone. He loves seeing the world but likes to stick close-by you, he really is a big baby.
Wilbur is fully housetrained and does his business as soon as he gets outside. He likes to get that out of the way so he can devote the rest of him time to outdoor fun and shenanigans ...sticks, Kongs and snowballs don’t get old! I laugh soo hard watching him turn into a big goof-ball out there...legs for days lol.
He also likes to spend time over at my neighbour’s house where he can interact with their 3 female dogs and kids (see pics!) Wilbur plays with toys with the kids (he’s super gentle) and he also loves to play in the snow with them.
Wilbur is crated during my absence and he does not whine and carry on while in his crate. He is happy to curl up and relax in there. I don’t crate him at night and he is a great sleeper who does not get into any mischief while my eyes are shut!
My favorite things about him are him are when he gallops around the yard with long legs a-flyin’ and his ability to slow down so effortlessly and gracefully. Wilbur has a bum back leg which apparently will not require surgery when he’s older (that is fantastic)...it absolutely does not slow him down, he doesn’t seem to even conscious of it and frankly it is rare that I am even reminded of it. It is really only noticeable when he sits for a treat and that one long leg stretches out to the side. He is impossible to resist when he lightly nudges my hand, reminding me that it is time for an ear or head rub. Those big puppy eyes cannot be ignored.
Wilbur will absolutely thrive in a family household with or without other dogs. He is an easy-going sweetheart (trust me I don’t say that about every dog lol) and I am hopeful he finds his forever home soon where he can live the happy life he so deserves.
Having owned a number of different Shepherds over the years (GSD, Belgian Malinois and various Shepherd mixes) the thing that stands out is Wilbur’s “off switch”. His ability to go from full-on playing to a calm state at the snap of my fingers is truly remarkable for such a youngster.
Dec 1/17 Wilbur is a pure bred and those knowing the breed know what they need, He is currently 80lbs and will be in the 100lb range we believe
He is a puppy, a big puppy so ppl will expect him to act like an adult dog which he won't. He is gentle, excellent temperament, funny and plays like a powerhouse with Alice, Scooby and Bowie.
He is high energy now, can't see it lasting that long being a big dog but will always need at least one solid run with other dogs daily as well as walks. Getting him into Lure Training, Tracking or Herdng classes would be great too.
He would be great in a family with kids, especially ones old enuf to play with them. not an issue for cats and another dog would be excellent.
Now he does have a bum leg on the right, congenital apparently. The patella is twisted, the long bones above and below are off too cuz he can't bend his leg much. That being said he can walk, run, play and is a powerhouse of a dog. There is nothing to do for the leg surgically so no expenses need to be expected. Doing our raw diet will put off arthritis for a haseriously long time. I had a St Bernard with Wobblers and we had no idea until he was 9yrs old (wobblers is a degenerative disk disease that makes them unble to walk) but we can talk about that at an appt. He is also the right size for taking the human version of metacam - 100 times cheaper than metacam - WHEN he needs it in 10 yrs or so
nov 28/17 Wibur arrives fri, His breed is pure Beauceron. The Beauceron is a guard dog and herding dog breed falling into the working dog category whose origins lie in the plains of Northern France. The Beauceron is also known as Berger de Beauce (sheepdog from Beauce) or Bas Rouge (red-stockings).
