Adopt a German Shepherd Dog
Amelia the Dog needs a home
TEMPERAMENT
She's an energetic girl who loves to be outside. She loves to hang out with her people and takes treats softly from your hand. She is also one smart cookie -- she quickly learned the commands sit, back (to back away from the kennel gate), and heel, all while in boarding. It boggles the mind to think what she can and will learn in a home! She is highly trainable with strong leadership and consistency.
Amelia still has some "mouthing" issues and is also a big-time chewer. She LOVES toys, but can sometimes be territorial about them. Chasing balls is one of her most favorite activities, and she needs continued work on learning to release them to her human when requested.
Because she had a history of starvation, Amelia still tends to want to eat everything she sees and is working on slowing down at mealtimes with the use of a slow feeder. She also needs to be in a home where there is no possibility of small toys or objects being within her reach (to avoid swallowing them).
Amelia would make an excellent running partner, a great overall buddy, is house-trained and crate-trained, and does well in the house generally. She's also great with people she meets.
OTHER ANIMALS
Amelia does okay with slow, supervised introductions to other dogs. She does have some barrier reactivity to other dogs, so this would need to be an ongoing training issue until safely integrated into her new home. She has done okay with cats when exposed to them at a groomer's, as well as at the vet clinic -- she does shows some curiosity, so any cat introductions would need to be supervised as well. Amelia would do okay in a home with another dog after slow introductions, but would also be okay as a single pet.
CHILDREN
Due to both her size and "mouthing" issues, Amelia needs to be in a home with NO children.
MEDICAL
Amelia has completed heartworm treatment and flew right through it. She has gained weight and is healthy and happy. She simply requires continued monthly heartworm preventative like any other dog.
If you're looking for a beautiful girl who's just out of puppy-stage but still has high energy,
and are a strong, consistent leader who's willing to finish up her training,
AMELIA may be the dream dog you're looking for!!
AMELIA'S ADOPTION FEE: $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
