Australian Shepherd / Border Collie / Mixed (medium coat) Dog

Jack the Dog needs a home

Jack has exceptional intelligence – We are not going to tell you HE wrote this.... but we know if he had, he would have said:

I was at the shelter before and found a wonderful, loving home.  I loved those folks so much and enjoyed walking with them off leash and laying at their feet and riding in the pick-up.   I responded when they called and constantly watched for them to indicate what I was supposed to be doing.  However, I messed up --- I thought that if I did not know someone who came to the door, I should be suspicious of them if they seemed to be scared of me and maybe even growl – so I did.  They would have forgiven that, I think, if I had not gotten too intent in my desire to protect “my people".

I did not understand about grandchildren and how very special they are ---and that they are supposed to get lots of attention, even though they might be taking attention and love that I thought was mine.  I am ashamed to say I nipped at a kid and no one had seen why.  And unfortunately in another setting I did bite an adult that reached to pick up an item that I thought was a toy for me to play with.  So, here I am looking for a new family that knows that I am both quick to learn and intensely loving and devoted to folks who make me theirs "

Jack was returned to Safe Haven after these bites in his adoptive home, so he was sent to a professional trainer to assess Jack's safety and if he was safe, to learn what type of home that would be most ideal for him.  After many months, Jack is back at Safe Haven and Robin, the trainer, let us know Jack is a nice dog, that deserves another chance in a home better suited for him.  He does need a home where he is an only dog, and with no children.  Jack actually did very well with his obedience training, and as it says above, he definitely is an intelligent dog!  Robin is willing to talk and even meet with any potential adopters and make sure they understand what type of home and training Jack will do best in - but most of all Jack will need an owner that is willing to take the "leader of the pack" role.  Jack's new owner will also need to take seriously what can happen when Jack is around new people, and be willing to kennel Jack or keep him in another safe room away from company when they visit.

So if you consider yourself fairly dog savy, and are looking for a great young companion, that would love to further his obedience training - Jack may just be a perfect match for you - please contact us and come meet Jack!
