UPDATED 11/1/17:
HE’S BACK! But Spanky was not adopted and returned; he merely went to another rescue for a while because we hoped a change of scenery would change his luck. Now that he is back with us, we are all delighted to see his smiling face and he is delighted to see us too. (He always was a favorite of our shelter staff.)
Spanky is a 4 year old, 34 pound, male Staffordshire Bull Terrier (mix) who strutted into Almost Home (over 3 years ago) as only he can do. He wears a fitted, blond brindle coat that is silky to the touch and he LOVES to be loved on by people he trusts. He is so darn cute when he gets his tight little body builder’s physique in full strut mode. As we admire him, our adoring hearts flutter. He is SHORT, SQUAT, and ALL SMILES!!! (He’s even been featured on “The Barks” website for the cutest smiling dogs!)
Spanky does have some emotional baggage though. He comes from an abusive home that had two other dogs confined outside on the property. One, unfortunately, was allowed to freeze to death during the polar vortex of 2013. Shortly thereafter, Spanky and his sister were rescued by Animal Control. His sister is happy and living the good life in her forever home now, but poor little Spanky is still waiting for his. Perhaps that is because he is meant to be YOUR dog and you are just now discovering him. We certainly hope so!
Spanky usually walks well on a leash and he LOVES to give and receive affection. When he runs, he can get going so fast that he canters. Now and again he will lose control of the speed he gains and he will fall over and roll down the hill. When he comes to a stop, he shakes it all off and runs back to staff for cuddle time and belly rubs. Spanky has many great traits. He:
- knows and responds to a lot of commands. He is a smart, eager student and has learned: sit and wait, down and wait, twirl to the right, twirl to the left, catch, and leave-it. He’s also learned to jump through a hula-hoop! He loves the attention our dog trainer gives him, and responds well to her consistent ways. He truly wants to please her and he will want to please you too!
- sits for treats and accepts them with a very gentle mouth.
- is a medium to low energy dog.
- enjoys a calm environment and would relish being a home body and hanging out in a safe place.
- is very clean in his room (indicating he’d be easy to house train).
- likes to ride in the car.
- loves to sit on people’s laps and receive as many belly rubs as he can get.
Spanky is a very smart and careful dog. He can be afraid of strangers, children, and men, and has been known to growl at them. He does warm up once he realizes your intentions are good though. He is also afraid of toys that make noise or are tossed his way. He isn’t a fan of most other dogs even though he did live with other dogs before our shelter got him. He is not good with cats.
He will do best with an ADULT family that doesn’t have other pets and/or children who visit.
NOT GOOD WITH DOGS. NOT GOOD WITH CATS. NOT GOOD WITH KIDS.
